If you’re thinking about eloping in Switzerland and planning how to do it, you’ve probably already seen the photos—crazy peaks, beautiful lakes, waterfalls everywhere. But planning an elopement here isn’t just about picking a spot. It’s about choosing the right location, timing it around weather and crowds, and building a day that actually feels relaxed instead of rushed.

If you want a legal ceremony, you’ll need to go through some paperwork, which varies based on your nationality. For this reason, many couples choose to handle the legal aspect in their country and have a symbolic ceremony in Switzerland. This will also allow for less-stress preceding and on the day. In Switzerland, only civil ceremonies conducted by a Swiss civil authority are legally recognized. Religious or symbolic ceremonies, while beautiful and meaningful, won’t have legal standing unless you’ve first completed the civil process. To get married legally, you and your partner will need to submit a formal application to the Swiss civil registry office in the canton where you wish to marry. Both partners must appear in person and provide official documents. These usually include valid passports, birth certificates, proof of residency or visa status, and in some cases, certificates of no impediment to marriage. Requirements can vary slightly depending on the canton, so it’s essential to check ahead of time with the local registry.
If neither of you resides in Switzerland, some cantons still allow foreigners to marry. However, you’ll need to allow several weeks for paperwork processing — sometimes longer. Common Mistakes When Planning an Elopement in Switzerland

It may look simple on the surface (and if done right it absolutely can be!) but there are a few mistakes I see couples make. Avoiding these can make the difference between a stressful day and an unforgettable one!
1. Trying to Do Too Much in One Day
Switzerland may look small on a map, but travel here takes longer than people think. A common mistake is trying to visit multiple regions in one day and queeze in several “bucket list” location, which leads to a tight, packed schedule that is impossible to follow and just makes you feel rushed all day. Talk to your local photographer – they know the area and can help you avoid this, while still making sure your day is filled with stunning locations.
2. Choosing a Location Only Based on Photos
It’s easy to fall in love with iconic, instagram-famous spots, but not every one of these location is the right fit for every couple (I think none of them are for eloping). What photos don’t show is how accessible (or inaccessible)they are, and how most are packed with tourists by mid-morning. Switzerland isn’t lacking gorgeous spots, and there are a ton that are not well known and allow for privacy, beauty, and adventure.
3. Not Having a Weather Backup Plan
Mountain weather in Switzerland is unpredictable, even in summer, and couples who don’t plan for this often feel stressed when conditions change. Your elopement photographer should be able to recommend locations that are good for a plan b and know how to build buffer time into your schedule. 5. Not Booking Key Vendors Early
Switzerland is a popular destination, especially in summer – and it’s getting busier every year. That means photographers, hair & makeup artists, and accommodations can book out months (or even a year) in advance. If you’re planning for peak season, it’s best to secure all these vendors and accomodations early and then build the rest of your plans around that!
6. Wearing the Wrong Outfit for the Environment
Mountain elopements aren’t the same as traditional weddings. I’ve seen couples struggle with shoes that aren’t suitable for hiking, or outfits that don’t handle wind or cold (or simply lack of layers). A few small adjustments make a huge difference, like sturdy footwear (even if just for part of the day – you can put on nicer shoes for photos! Although I love a good hiking boot pic!), layers, and outfits that allow movement.
