Eloping at the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland
ELOPING AT THE ALETSCH GLACIER IN SWITZERLAND: Everything You Need to Know (Plus M+C’s Elopement Story!)
There is something absolutely otherworldly about standing near or on ancient ice, surrounded by towering alpine peaks and crisp mountain air that hums with silence and power. Eloping on a glacier in Switzerland is an unforgettable experience for couples who crave beauty, adventure, intimacy, and connection to nature. In this post, I’ll walk you through what eloping at a glacier in Switzerland (like at the Aletsch) involves, everything you need to plan, pack, and think of for your perfect glacier elopement, and I’ll take you behind the scenes of M+C’s breathtaking elopement on the Aletsch Glacier.

About Me: A Local Swiss Elopement Photographer with a Passion for Wild Landscapes
Hi, I’m Kathryn! I’m an originally Canadian, now Switzerland-based elopement photographer specializing in mountain and nature elopements. I help couples plan once-in-a-lifetime wedding and elopement adventures (such as M+C’s adventure eloping at the Aletsch glacier, in Switzerland!) surrounded by the landscapes they love. My photography style blends candid, romantic moments with stunning alpine backdrops. More than anything, I care deeply about your story, and I’ll help you craft an experience that feels true to you.
With local knowledge, fluent languages (English, French, Italian), and extensive hiking and elopement experience, I’m here to guide you every step of the way—from plan A to plan Z.

Why Choose the Aletsch or another Glacier for your Elopement in Switzerland?
1.1. Glaciers & Frozen Trails: Eloping in a Landscape Like No Other
Switzerland’s glaciers offer the kind of jaw-dropping backdrop that looks straight out of a fantasy film. From sweeping ridgelines to fields of ancient ice, these frozen landscapes reflect light in a way that’s absolutely magical in photos. And the best part? You can have it all to yourselves!
There are many glaciers in Switzerland that are suprisingly accessible (so you don’t have to be an expert hiker to plan your dream glacier elopement!). While some may require hiking, others are reachable by cable car or small trains. This allows for more flexibility when it comes to mountain weather. In addition, if you’re feeling particularily adventurous, helicopters are also an option! There are many helicopter companies that offer glacier landings, and it’s a special opportunity to add to an already once-in-a-lifetime experience.
1.2. An Elopement Experience in the Swiss Alps for Adventurous Souls
Glacier elopements aren’t just beautiful—they’re thrilling. They involve hiking, sometimes layers of gear, and an openness to weather shifts and mountain surprises. The cold of the ice continuously incites you to fully live the day, and each melting drop is a reminder of how important it is to soak in every moment (but I can help with that too, as your elopement photographer!).
If you and your partner love the outdoors, thrive on adventure, and don’t mind a little unpredictability, this might just be your dream day.
1.3. Elopement Memories That Last as Long as the Glaciers Themselves
How many people can say they got married above the clouds with nothing but snow, rock, and sky around them? With only the echoing wind to hear their vows?
Glacier elopements may not be for everyone, but they are easier to plan than most people would think. For the right couple, it’s an unmatched experience. M+C’s ALETSCH GLACIER ELOPEMENT
2.1. Choosing a Glacier Elopement in the Swiss Alps – The Couple and the Challenge
M+C were an absolute dream couple—laid-back, fun, and completely in love. However, before the elopement comes the planning – we had locked in the destination and dates for their glacier elopement months prior, but as the date neared, the weather the entire week before kept changing by the hour, with the threat of thunderstorms covering the hours we had planned for their elopement. That’s the thing about mountain elopements—you always need a backup plan (or three)!
The most important thing when planning a glacier or mountain elopement in Switzerland is being prepared for this, and accepting whatever weather may come. M+C were absolute troopes, only caring about spending the day together – rain or shine. They were happy with every backup plan I offered, always content to switch things up if necessary, and, most importantly, willing to embrace the rain!
2.2. Planning a Glacier Elopement in Switzerland: Flexibility is Key
The day before eloping at the Aletsch glacier in Switzerland, M+C and I jointly decided to stick with the original date but moved the timeline to much earlier in the day to avoid what looked to be certain afternoon storms. Thankfully, this flexibility paid off! We managed to do the entire hike we had planned without rushing, as the rain danced around us all day but never soaked us, just a few gentle drizzles. We even captured stunning photos because of the clouds, which allowed for a beautiful, soft light to reflect off the ice.

2.3. The Glacier Elopement Journey: From the Hotel to the Aletsch Glacier and Back
We started M+C’s elopement journey with makeup and hair at the hotel, done by the incredible nuancesmakeup. She created a beautiful, wild, flowery look for M, which was perfect for the vibe they wanted, and which looked absolutely incredible against the Aletsch glacier backdrop.
Getting ready is such a special moment—quiet, intimate, and full of anticipation. It gave us the chance to spend time together, talk, and learn about M+C’s beautiful story. We laughed as C’s pants ripped slightly on the way out the door—a little mishap that made the day feel even more real – and then ventured out towards the glacier.
2.4. The Elopement Hike and the Views of the Aletsch Glacier
After taking the cable car up, we started M+C’s elopement hike at the Aletsch glacier, traversing ridgelines with dramatic views before making our way down to a peaceful alpine lake, the final destination for the day before continuing on to the alpine village where the hotel was. Along the way, we passed fluffy sheep and a field of curious cows—classic Swiss charm. Nuancesmakeup came along and brought a huge bar of Swiss chocolate for us to enjoy along the way, a snack we were all grateful for halfway down the mountain. Chocolate, cows, mountains: the holy Swiss trinity.
2.5. Ending our Glacier Elopement with Fondue and Family
After the adventure, we hiked back to our hotels and later met up for dinner at a cozy Swiss restaurant. High on the spectacular glacier views the Aletsch had allowed us to be witness to all day, we enjoyed fondue, local wine, laughter—no pressure, no stress. Just love and celebration.

Best Time of Year for a Glacier Elopement in Switzerland
3.1. Glacier Elopements in Summer to Early Fall
Generally, glacier elopements are best from late June to early October. Earlier in the summer, snow can still cover trails. By late October, snowfall can start again, and conditions become less predictable.
3.2. Weather Variability
Even in summer, weather changes quickly. Always prepare for rain, fog, or wind. That’s why I always build multiple timelines and scout weather windows with my couples.
What to Wear when Eloping on a Glacier in Switzerland
4.1. Wedding Attire for your Glacier Elopement
When eloping on glaciers, such as at the Aletsch glacier in Switzerland, choosing the right outfit means balancing beauty and practicality. Dresses that flow or long veils in the wind create stunning movement in photos (and I highly recommend them), but layering is key. Thermal leggings and a cozy fleece can hide easily beneath the gown, while keeping you warm throughout the day. Grooms might consider suits in breathable wool or textured fabrics that provide warmth and stretch. Don’t forget accessories—shawls, scarves, and stylish outerwear make for great portraits and warmth. Think wind-proof, layer-friendly, and comfortable. It may not look pretty when hiking but making sure you’re both warm is absolutely essential. Besides, you can always briefly take the layers off for the photographs!
4.2. Footwear and Layers: Essential for Swiss Glacier Elopements
Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots are a must—no stilettos here (unless you want to bring them along to change for photos, which M did!). I guarantee, your feet will thank you for waterproof, high-ankle boots with excellent grip. Extra pairs of socks are also indispensable. Further layers should include a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating layer (like fleece or down), and a windproof/waterproof outer shell. Bring gloves, a hat, sunglasses (glacier glare is real!), and hand warmers to stay cozy.

Choosing the Perfect Glacier Location for your Glacier Elopement in Switzerland
5.1. Eloping at the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland
Aletsch is Switzerland’s largest glacier and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is easily accessible from multiple locations by cable car, during which you can enjoy stunning views. Or, you can choose between the variety of ridge hikes if you’d like a more remote feel for your elopement day. This is the glacier that M+C eloped at, and it was by far one of the more stunning locations any of us had ever seen. The ancient and divine quality of the ice could be felt all over in the air around us, and it is undoubtedly a perfect choice for a glacier elopement, and an overall unforgettable day.
5.2. Other Swiss Glacier Options to Consider for your Glacier Elopement in Switzerland
There are many glacier options for your elopement, and each glacier has its own mood and terrain. When you get in touch with me, I’ll ask about your vision, how accessible you’d like the glacier to be, how you’d like to get there (helicopter, cable car, hiking, etc.), and other criteria so as to be able to recommend the perfect locations for your perfect glacier elopement.
Here are a few glacier options that are reachable by foot/cable car:
Saas-Fee: this is my second favorite glacier location, after the Aletsch. Known as the “Pearl of the Alps,” this car-free resort town sits at 1,800 meters and is surrounded by thirteen 4,000-meter peaks, giving it a dramatic and awe-inspiring skyline. What makes Saas-Fee especially unique is its year-round glacier access. Thanks to the nearby Allalin Glacier, you can walk, ski, or even dine at the highest revolving restaurant in the world with sweeping views of snow and ice. For elopements, there are plenty of accessible trails with breathtaking backdrops, as well as more adventurous alpine options for couples who want to hike a little deeper into the landscape.
Rhone Glacier: This glacier is located near the Furka Pass. It is significantly smaller than the Aletsch glacier but incredibly picturesque, with a nearby ice cave in some seasons.
Trift Glacier: Ideal for couples looking for a challenging hike and remote atmosphere. The suspension bridge over Triftsee adds drama to the experience.
Morteratsch Glacier: Located in the Engadin valley, it’s accessible and scenic, with a trail that gets you close to the ice. Great for couples who want beauty without an intense hike.
Even more options are available for helicopter glacier weddings and elopements, during which you can land on the glaciers and truly be on the most remote and unexplored areas of the glaciers, and spend your day solely taking in the majesty of the ancient ice. Contact me to begin planning this or to request helicopter company recommendations.

Tips from a Swiss Elopement Photographer for Planning Your Glacier Elopement
- Have multiple backup plans: Mountain weather can change quickly—be ready to shift your timeline or location.
- Start early: Mornings tend to be more stable weather-wise. Plus, fewer hikers = more privacy!
- Work with experienced vendors: From makeup artists who can work with altitude to guides who understand terrain.
- Train a little: If you’re planning a longer hike, some fitness prep will help you feel your best.
- Embrace imperfection: Muddy boots, windblown hair, and sheep on your trail? Part of the story!
