A Note on Protecting Switzerland’s Wild Places
Switzerland’s landscapes are some of the most breathtaking in the world—but they are also fragile. In recent years, certain spots like Oeschinensee have experienced a huge increase in visitors due to social media, which has put strain on the environment and the local communities, and it is now forbidden to get married there. As an elopement photographer who treasures these places, I take great care to avoid contributing to overtourism. This means that while many of the locations on this list are well-known, some of the most secluded spots I photograph will not be named publicly.
I know many more than just 30 of the best places to elope or get married in Switzerland, but I only share these hidden gems only with my couples after booking, so they can enjoy them responsibly and in privacy (some of the best, lesser known ones aren’t mentioned here for this very purpose). By keeping these special places off the public radar, we help protect their beauty for future adventurers and love stories.

Meet Your Photographer!
Hi! I’m Kathryn, a Canadian (but Switzerland-based) mountain elopement photographer. I specialize in capturing the authentic, raw, adventurous essence of your most intimate moments. My style leans towards natural, warm tones, and I prioritize location scouting, planning assistance, and weather-optimized timelines to ensure your shoot transcends “just photos” and becomes a lifetime memory.
As a Switzerland-based elopement photographer, I have lived in Switzerland for over 20 years and explored its valleys, ridges, and secret corners to find the most breathtaking, meaningful locations. This guide distills years of scouting and shooting into 30 of the best, most incredible places to get married and elope in Switzerland, each with its own character, charm, and hidden gems.

How to Choose the Best Location for Your Switzerland Elopement
While Switzerland definitely does not lack breathtaking locations, the “best” spot depends entirely on your unique vision. My first tip? Don’t trust the classic, Instagram famous spots! While places like Oeschinensee are undeniably gorgeous, they’ve also been so oversaturated with tourism. Consequently, the location no longer allows elopements or weddings to take place there. Besides, who wants to elope in a place that’s crawling with tourists? I firmly believe in finding a spot that’s meant just for you, so you can fully experience your day and just be with your partner. Consequently, the 30 best places to get married and elope in Switzerland are recommended with this in mind.

Before deciding on your location, you should consider other factors. Think about your comfort level with hiking or altitude, the type of scenery that excites you most or is meaningful to you as a couple, and the time of year you’re wanting to elope. Some locations are only accessible in summer due to snow, while others—like certain valleys—are gorgeous year-round. Or, certain waterfalls are weaker (or even nonexistent) in the winter. Also, think about the kind of activities you’d love to incorporate into your day. It could be boating, cable cars, helicopters, dog-sledding, kayaking, or picnics with panoramic views – not all of these are possible year-round, so that may influence your decision. I work closely with my couples to match them with locations that fit their style, abilities, and dreams—ensuring your elopement feels completely your own.
Things to Consider when Planning an Elopement in Switzerland
- Seasonality: Summer (June–September) is perfect for hiking, golden hour photos, and wildflowers. Autumn (late September–October) offers stunning mountains absolutely covered in golden foliage. Winter (December–March) is magical for snow lovers.
- Crowd Levels: Popular spots like Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are best at sunrise or off-season, because the crowds in high season are absolutely overwhelming. Like Oeschinensee, these spots have been promoted online everywhere. So, while gorgeous, I only recommend eloping there if you’ll be in Switzerland during the off-season, and even then, I can recommend similar hidden gems that are just as beautiful but are subject to way less tourism.
- Accessibility: The beauty of eloping in the Swiss Alps is that many breathtaking locations can be easily reached by car, train or cable car. However, if your vision includes hiking, there’s plenty of options for that too, and those locations are likely to have less crowds around.
- Activities – Many locations offer hiking, boat rides, cable cars, or even helicopter tours for a unique experience.
- Vibe: Decide if you want epic mountains, a peaceful lake, lush forests, or a mix.

Activities to Include in Your Switzerland Elopement Day
One of the best parts about eloping in Switzerland is how many unique experiences you can weave into your day. Beyond just choosing a beautiful ceremony location, you can fill your elopement timeline with adventures that make it feel deeply personal. Hiking is the obvious choice—anything from a short walk to a full-day trek—but there’s so much more. You might take a scenic gondola ride to a high-altitude viewpoint. Or, go paragliding over emerald valleys, go dog sledding in front of the Matterhorn. Maybe enjoy a private boat ride across a glacial lake.
For couples who love slower-paced moments, you could plan a picnic of Swiss cheeses, fresh bread, and chocolate with panoramic mountain views, visit an alpine dairy to taste cheese made on-site, or wander through historic villages for candid, romantic portraits. In winter, you can swap hiking boots for skis or snowshoes, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snowy forests, wander through Christmas markets, or end the day in a cozy chalet with fondue and mulled wine. These activities not only give variety to your photos but also help you create unforgettable memories. More importantly, ones that are entirely unique to you.
Understanding Switzerland’s Weather for Your Elopement
Switzerland’s landscapes change dramatically with the seasons. Knowing what to expect from the weather can make all the difference for your elopement experience. In summer (June to August), you can expect warm days in the valleys and cooler temperatures in the mountains, but also the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. This is prime time for wildflowers, turquoise lakes, and blooming meadows. Autumn (September to October) brings crisp air, golden foliage, and fewer crowds—ideal for clear mountain views. Winter (December to March) transforms the Alps into a snowy wonderland. It’s perfect for couples dreaming of a winter elopement, but you’ll need to be ready for cold temperatures and shorter daylight hours. Spring (April to May) can be unpredictable, with lingering snow in high-altitude areas but gorgeous blossoms and greenery in the lower valleys.
Regardless of the season, weather in the mountains can change quickly. Blue skies can shift to clouds and rain in minutes. I always plan backup locations and carry extra layers so we can adapt and make the most of whatever nature gives us. 30 BEST PLACES TO GET MARRIED AND ELOPE IN SWITZERLAND
1. Engelberg – Eloping in Alpine Beauty with Endless Variety
Engelberg is the definition of versatility. Nestled in a calm valley surrounded by dramatic peaks, this central Swiss gem offers a mix of alpine meadows, mirror-like lakes, and glacier views—all within easy reach. In summer, you can hike through fields scented with wildflowers, spot adorable marmots sunbathing on rocks (sometimes you can even feed them!), and follow streams that weave their way down from the mountains. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for a cozy, intimate elopement, or an adventure-filled ski elopement. The Titlis Glacier is accessible year-round by cable car, meaning you can add icy, high-alpine drama to your day without needing technical climbing skills.

2. Lakes in Engelberg– Get Married amongst Calm Waters and Mountain Reflections
Just a short cable car ride from Engelberg, various lakes offer serene beauty without the crowds. Their turquoise waters perfectly reflect the jagged peaks above, creating a natural frame for your vows. Some of these lakes even have beautiful nearby waterfalls. The area around the lakes is often flat, making it easy for couples who prefer a gentle stroll rather than a strenuous hike. In summer, you can even rent a rowboat in some areas for romantic photos on the water! In winter, the snow creates a soft, fairytale-like backdrop.
3. Ticino – For Couples Who Want to Elope Where the Alps Meet the Mediterranean
Ticino (where I spent most of my years in Switzerland!) feels like a blend of Switzerland and Italy. Palm trees sway along lakefront promenades and cobblestoned piazzas bathed in golden sunlight. The Valle Verzasca is one of many highlights, with its emerald river winding beneath centuries-old stone bridges. The Foroglio Waterfall thunders down from towering cliffs, creating a dramatic backdrop for adventurous couples. You could spend your morning in the mountains and your evening sipping wine in Lugano or Ascona, with a Mediterranean sunset as your backdrop. Spring and autumn here are particularly lovely, with warm weather and fewer tourists.

4. Valais – Glaciers, Vineyards, and Iconic Peaks as Your Elopement Backdrop
Valais is a canton of contrasts. Here, you’ll find the legendary Matterhorn towering over alpine valleys, as well as sunny vineyard terraces along the Rhône River. Summer is perfect for high-altitude hikes to glacial lakes, while autumn’s golden larch forests create a painter’s dream palette. Zermatt is the most famous location, but for quieter experiences, valleys like the Val d’Hérens or Lötschental offer just as much drama without the crowds. Imagine saying your vows with glaciers gleaming in the background! And then, enjoying a celebratory glass of local wine as the sun sets.
5. Oberalp Pass – Eloping along Scenic Swiss Mountain Roads & Trails
At 2,044 meters above sea level, Oberalp Pass is a scenic mountain route connecting Andermatt to the canton of Graubünden. It’s a spectacular choice for couples who love the drama of high alpine landscapes—rolling green hills in summer, golden hues in autumn, and snow in winter. The pass is also home to the source of the Rhine River, marked by a picturesque red lighthouse. Because of its accessibility by car during the summer months, it’s possible to combine the pass with nearby lakes and valleys for a day full of variety.
6. Bernese Oberland – Getting Married in The Quintessential Swiss Alps
This region is home to some of Switzerland’s most iconic scenery: towering peaks, lush green valleys, and charming alpine villages. It’s a place where waterfalls tumble from cliffs hundreds of meters high, and glaciers cling to mountainsides. The Bernese Oberland is vast, meaning you can find both famous spots like Lauterbrunnen and hidden ridges that you’ll have all to yourselves. Summer brings endless hiking opportunities, while winter offers snowy, romantic landscapes.

7. Männlichen – Mountain Elopement Paradise
Perched high above Wengen and Grindelwald, Männlichen offers panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. Accessible by cable car, it combines dramatic scenery with relatively easy access—perfect for couples who want epic views without a strenuous hike. In summer, the meadows here are filled with wildflowers, while in autumn, the air is crisp and the light golden. The Royal Walk to the summit is a short, rewarding trail that makes for stunning ceremony locations! And, the surrounding ridges offer quieter spots for vows away from the main viewing platforms.
8. Arosa – Elope amongst Lakes, Forests, and Alpine Wildlife
Arosa is known for its tranquil lakes, deep forests, and abundant wildlife (you might spot ibex or marmots!). In autumn, the larch trees turn golden, creating a warm and romantic atmosphere. Winter brings deep snow and the possibility of cozy sleigh rides. The surrounding trails offer plenty of secluded locations for a private elopement.
9. Val d’Illiez – Choose to Elope in the Hidden Gem of the Valais Alps
Tucked away in the Dents du Midi region, the Val d’Illiez offers tranquil alpine charm without tourist buses. Meadows roll into pine forests, and crazy jagged peaks form a dramatic skyline. In summer, it’s a paradise for wildflowers and clear streams; in winter, the snow blankets the landscape in peaceful silence. The region is dotted with rustic chalets, making it ideal for couples who want privacy and authenticity.

10. Rigi – Eloping with The Queen of the Mountains
Rigi offers 360-degree views over lakes, mountains, and even as far as Germany’s Black Forest on clear days. It’s accessible by cogwheel train or cable car. Sunrise here is especially magical, with golden light spilling over the peaks and illuminating the morning mist in the valleys below.
11. Brissago Islands – Eloping in a Botanical Paradise on Lake Maggiore
The Brissago Islands in Ticino feel almost tropical thanks to their warm microclimate. Accessible only by boat, they’re home to a lush botanical garden with rare plants from all over the world. For a couple who loves nature but wants something more exotic than alpine meadows, this is a dreamy option. Imagine exchanging vows surrounded by palm fronds and jasmine. Then, sailing away on a private boat as the sun dips behind the mountains. Spring through early autumn is ideal, and weekday ceremonies ensure privacy.

12. Graubünden – Secluded Alpine Lakes, Vie Ferrate, & More to Guarantee an Adventurous Swiss Elopement
Hidden in the forests of Graubünden are many stunning turquoises lakes with crystal-clear waters and peaceful surroundings. Many are reachable by a short walk, making them accessible while still feeling completely tucked away from the world. The forested shorelines create an intimate, fairytale atmosphere for a ceremony. Early mornings here are often misty, adding a layer of romance and mystery to your photos. In some locations in summer, you can rent a small rowboat or use one of the floating platforms for unique water-based photos. Because some are popular for swimming, early mornings or off-season visits are best for avoiding people in the background.

13. Les Avants – for Swiss Alpine Charm Elopements
Les Avants is a peaceful village above Montreux, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Geneva in the distance. In spring, it’s famous for its narcissus fields. Autumn here is equally stunning, with golden foliage and crisp mountain air. The location is easy to reach by train or car, and it’s perfect for couples who want natural beauty without a strenuous hike.

14. Schynige Platte – Wildflower Heaven
Reached by a nostalgic cogwheel train from Wilderswil, Schynige Platte is a ridge offering panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, as well as Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. In summer, the meadows here burst with wildflowers, making it one of the most colorful elopement spots in Switzerland. There are multiple hiking trails along the ridge, so you can choose a quiet corner away from the main paths for your ceremony.
15. Alpine Elopement Tranquility in Appenzell, Switzerland
The canton of Appenzell offers peaceful mountain lakes with emerald waters and traditional Swiss chalets along their shores. Multiple locations are easily accessible and ideal for couples who enjoy walking but don’t want anything too extreme. The surrounding peaks reflect beautifully in the waters at sunrise and sunset, creating dreamy photo opportunities.
16. Melchsee-Frutt – Lakes and Mountain Serenity for your Swiss Elopement
This car-free mountain village sits at 1,920 meters and is surrounded by alpine lakes. The area feels untouched, with rolling meadows, grazing cows, and mirror-like waters perfect for intimate ceremonies. It’s accessible by gondola, and because it’s less known, you can often find complete solitude—especially in the early morning.

17. Stoos Ridge – Dramatic Cliffside Views to Witness your Elopement
For adventurous couples, the ridge Sttos ridge hike offers some of the most jaw-dropping views in Switzerland. The narrow ridge trail gives you sweeping panoramas of the surrounding mountains and lakes in every direction. While you might not hold your ceremony directly on the ridge, the nearby peaks and meadows make for safer and equally beautiful spots.
18. Lauterbrunnen – Eloping in the Valley of 72 Waterfalls
Lauterbrunnen is often described as the inspiration for Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings, and it’s easy to see why. Steep cliffs rise dramatically from the valley floor, with waterfalls plunging hundreds of meters. Like Grindelwald, it’s very popular, so timing is key—sunrise or late evening ceremonies are best for avoiding crowds, as well as choosing to elope in the off season. From here, you can take cable cars up to quieter spots, where you’ll find breathtaking views with fewer people.

19. Zinal – Remote Valley in the Val d’Anniviers
Zinal feels like the end of the world in the best way possible. Surrounded by 4,000-meter peaks and glaciers, it’s a paradise for couples who want to feel immersed in high alpine wilderness. Summer here is short but glorious, with wildflowers and rushing streams. In winter, the snowy silence is almost otherworldly. The drive into the valley alone will take your breath away.
20. Blausee – Eloping at the Enchanted Blue Lake
Blausee is a small, crystal-clear lake hidden in the Bernese Oberland forest. Its deep blue color is striking year-round, and the surrounding woodland adds to the intimate, magical feeling. Because it’s within a nature park, ceremonies here require permission, but the fairytale setting is worth the extra planning. Early morning visits give you the best light and quiet.
21. Furka Pass – Eloping where James Bond Meets Swiss Alps
Furka Pass is famous for its winding roads and sweeping alpine views (and for featuring in the James Bond film Goldfinger). The road is only open in summer, and the high-altitude landscape is raw and wild. Small lakes and streams dot the area, offering intimate corners for a ceremony with cinematic flair, and nearby, you can explore the Rhone glacier caves.
22. Bettmeralp – Plan Your Elopement in a Car-Free Alpine Village
This charming village sits right next to the longest glacier in Europe and offers stunning views without car traffic. You can reach it by cable car, and from there, short hikes take you to panoramic viewpoints over the glacier and surrounding peaks. It’s a perfect blend of convenience and high-altitude beauty.

23. Riederalp – Eloping in Switzerland with Glacier Views
Close to Bettmeralp but with its own distinct charm, Riederalp offers sweeping views of the same glacier and peaceful meadows dotted with wildflowers. Sunrise and sunset are particularly stunning here, with soft light illuminating the icy expanse in the distance.
24. Gornergrat – Unmatched Views of the Matterhorn
Gornergrat is one of the best places to see the Matterhorn up close without hiking. The cogwheel train from Zermatt takes you to a panoramic platform with 360-degree views of surrounding peaks and glaciers. It’s spectacular year-round, though winter brings a quieter, more intimate feel.

25. Kandersteg Valley – Waterfalls and Hidden Lakes
Aside from Oeschinensee (which can no longer host elopements), Kandersteg offers multiple other hidden gems, like the nearby valleys with their rushing rivers and towering cliffs. In early summer, the waterfalls here are at their fullest, creating dramatic backdrops for adventurous portraits.
26. Saas-Fee: A Glacier Village of Quiet Beauty, Perfect for Adventurous, Eloping Couples
Saas-Fee is often called the “Pearl of the Alps,” and for good reason—this car-free village is surrounded by 13 peaks over 4,000 meters and sits near some of Switzerland’s most breathtaking glaciers. It combines peaceful mountain charm with dramatic alpine scenery, offering a truly immersive escape into nature. In summer, you can elope on high trails overlooking icefields or celebrate with a mountain picnic surrounded by wildflowers and marmots. In winter, the snow-draped landscape turns Saas-Fee into a serene wonderland. Accessible yet quiet, luxurious yet rooted in tradition, it’s the perfect place for couples who want beauty, seclusion, and that cozy “just us” feeling on their wedding day.

27. Andermatt – A Hidden Gem for Luxury Elopements in Switzerland
Tucked high in the Swiss Alps, Andermatt is a charming mountain village surrounded by dramatic peaks and alpine passes. It’s a fantastic base for couples wanting variety—within minutes you can access high mountain trails, serene valleys, and the winding Oberalp Pass. In summer, the meadows here explode with wildflowers, and in autumn, the larches turn gold against the snow-dusted mountains. Winter transforms the entire area into a snowy wonderland, perfect for a cozy, snow-filled elopement. The village itself offers beautiful architecture and luxury hotels for a comfortable, romantic stay after your adventure.
28. Zermatt – The Best Winter Elopement Location in Switzerland
Zermatt is home to one of Switzerland’s most iconic views—the Matterhorn—and offers a truly breathtaking backdrop for an elopement. Because it’s a car-free village, the atmosphere is peaceful and picturesque, with the sound of church bells and horse-drawn carriages replacing traffic noise. Zermatt is surrounded by incredible trails, from easy walks to challenging alpine hikes, and offers year-round glacier access. Summer brings lush meadows and crystal-clear lakes, while winter offers some of the best skiing in the Alps, as well as dog-sledding and glacier gave exploration. It is a popular destination, so for a more private experience, I recommend sunrise or off-season elopements.
29. Eloping in Grindelwald – Stunning but Popular
Grindelwald is one of the most photographed villages in Switzerland, with the mighty Eiger as its backdrop. Its location means easy access to high-altitude trails and viewpoints, but it’s also a magnet for tourists—especially in July and August. If you’re considering Grindelwald, I recommend early morning ceremonies or visiting in shoulder season (May–June or September–October) for more privacy. The First Cliff Walk and Bachalpsee are standout locations, offering sweeping mountain views and crystal-clear waters.
30. Poschiavo Valley – Eloping in the Home of the Most Beautiful Lakes in Switzerland
Surrounded by larch forests and mountains, the deep blue waters of the lakes in Poschiavo are especially magical in autumn when the golden larches reflect on its surface. Getting to the most famous lakes requires a moderate hike, which helps keep it quieter than more famous spots. This location is perfect for couples who want a secluded, romantic setting with a touch of adventure. The hike in, framed by forests and streams, is as enchanting as the lake itself.
